Gatewood Residence

light • welcoming •connected

At our first site visit, this couple walked me through their first home together. In the living room room, they had a well-loved IKEA couch and camping chairs, and pretty much nothing else—which made it clear we were starting from scratch.

Neither one of the couple had been a position to thoughtfully design a home from a clean state, and they knew they had different design tastes, though they did have very similar goals of how they wanted their home to feel.

We spent the first part of the project trying to hone in on a design that felt good to the both. I created 3 vastly different mood and design boards for them, so we could talk through their likes and dislikes of each and better determine what would work for them both.

Ultimately, we decided on the mood board (above) that felt bright, sunny, welcoming, and clear notes of nature.

As avid outdoorsy people (biking, camping, etc.), they wanted their home to have a sense of nature and elements that brought in the natural world.

Their house also had fantastic windows, so we wanted to capture that bright, sunny feeling throughout the year (that feeling can be precious in Seattle winters!). Our color palette evolved to blue and greys, with strategic elements of yellow to keep that sunny feeling.

With the mood board and color palette selected, I pulled together furniture, lighting, rugs, window treatments, and even art inspiration for their living room and dining room, and pulled it together in a design board (right).

Once the elements were selected, I created a simple floorplan to illustrated the layout with the specific furniture, so we could confirm we had the right size/scale of each piece (below).

Since working together, they have pulled together these elements, and purchased some fantastic new art, to create a home together.

They’ve also adopted a pup (see his photo below!) and have even gotten married at their home!

Not only does their home feel full of light and warmth and nature, it is clearly also full of love.
